Calypso Spikers target Pan Am Cup ninth spot
T&T "Calypso Spikers" will be hoping to stay on course to equal their best-ever finish of ninth spot when they resume play at the Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, from 4 pm today.
The Renele Forde-captained T&T women who ended at the bottom of their four-team Pool B round-robin series involving defending champions USA, Puerto Rico and Cuba with a 0-3 record will do battle with the losers of yesterday’s second seventh to tenth semifinal featuring Mexico and Peru.
In the first seventh to tenth playoff match, Cuba outlasted Argentina 3-2.
Costa Rica will feature in the other ninth to 12th semifinal versus Argentina from 2 pm today.
Last night in the main draw quarterfinals, USA came up against Colombia and Dominican Republic battled Puerto Rico.
Canada (Pool A) and Brazil (Pool C) by virtue of their perfect 3-0 records secured the two best first place finishes from the groups to earn automatic semifinal places for Friday’s encounters.
Also today, the quarterfinal losers will meet the seventh to tenth playoff winners, Cuba and either Mexico or Peru.

In 2016, the “Calypso Spikers” ended in the tenth spot, which equalled their finishes from 2009-2013 while they ended12th on debut in 2007 as well as 2008 and 11th in 2014.
The top five ranked teams at the conclusion of the tournament in Santo Domingo will earn tickets to next year’s Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.
