Shabazz calls up Young, Mims for Qualifiers
Canadian-based Andrea Young of Ottawa Fury and former national youth team player Taylor Mims are the two new faces announces by national coach football coach Jamaal Shabazz yesterday when he named his 20-member squad to contest the upcoming Concacaf Caribbean Women’s World Cup qualifying Group C at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva this weekend.
Mims comes in for Liana Hinds who picked up an injury in the team’s last game of the CFU Challenge against Guyana, and Young for Shanieka Paul.
T&T will kick-off its campaign against United States Virgin Islands (USVI) in the feature clash of a doubleheader on Saturday from 6:30 pm at the TTFA Home of Football venue, while St Kitts/Nevis will take on Grenada in the first encounter from 4 pm.
“This is an opportunity for us to re-establish our past reputation as a force in senior women’s football in the region,” Shabazz said yesterday. “This is the first step in what can be a most interesting journey for the team and the country We also have a blend of players that crosses a few generational paths. The U-17s, U-20s, the under 23s and veteran seniors are all represented in this squad which we’ve put together for the opening round of the qualifiers,” Shabazz added.
In addition to T&T’s opening game Saturday, the Soca Princesses will face Dominica on May 21, St Kitts/Nevis May 25 and will complete their campaign against Grenada on May 27. Only the winners of each of the five groups will advance to the Caribbean Final round scheduled for July 21 at a venue to be announced.
Tickets are priced at $30 and will be available at the match venue on match days.
