Forever the victim?

Monday, May 28, 2012

Are you a victim of circumstance(s)? Some blame their repeated circumstance(s) on bad luck; some blame it on themselves or on their parents and some say it’s not their fault because other people are picking on them and they resolve that nothing can be done about it. Some may even say that others don’t like them for any apparent reason. What about you? What do you say to yourself and possibly others when you go through the same unpleasant situations over and over? Do you wonder if you are going to be ‘Forever the victim?’ Be warned! By constantly asking ourselves if we are to be ‘Forever the victim?’ we can be fooled into thinking that our trying situations are hopeless. ‘Forever the victim?’ is (and will always be) a question that deserves a timely answer by all of us. By constant repetition of ‘Forever the victim?’ we may start thinking that it’s a stated fact, or a ‘victim status’ that must be lived up to daily. Sadly, some nurture ‘a self-defeating mindset’ for their entire lives, never daring or wanting to move away to a place of true peace and emotional freedom. Left unchecked, our responses to the situations that confront us can cause us to be in a restricted psychological and/or physical entrapment. Please allow the following God-inspired statement to be embedded deep inside: ‘life is not what happens to us; but rather, it is what we choose to do about what happens that makes the lasting difference.’ (Feel free to apply that particular statement as a life credo as well.)

Yes, we do have choices to make when the distasteful situations occur and in case we are not aware, not choosing to do anything about our situations is a choice as well. Let’s face it, we can’t always stop certain events from occurring, or time precisely when these events will happen; but we can respond with a sense of hope instead of despair. When situations suddenly arise, we should not be too quick to blame ourselves. Yes, there are instances when others have been malicious to us and/or we could have made a better choice, but ‘beating up’ ourselves only adds to the overall resulting damage. Physical damage is bad enough, but what is even worse is the damage to the mind and as a consequence, our view of life could easily become a dim one which can trigger an internal and/or external ‘blame game.’ Comments such as “It’s your fault!” “It’s not my fault!” “So what if it’s my fault?” “If it is my fault, then everybody leave me alone!” characterise the ‘blame game.’ Say no more!
In case you have been making similar type comments, STOP IT NOW! WE are not meant to be ‘Forever the victim!’ In spite of what we may see in the movies, it’s not about becoming ‘the victor’ over others; it’s about victorious and purposeful living! There are just too many unnecessary battles happening! Worse yet, they are being constantly highlighted. The ‘destroy and conquer’ attitude now prevalent all around us may be what is contributing to so much destruction in the society. Many are hardening their hearts and some are even giving up hope of ever being truly comfortable in this paradise that promised so much. I choose however to not give up, but rather give ‘it’ up. Sometimes I do so with just two words – ‘God, HELP!’ I am sure you agree with me. We need help fast! We need lasting solutions! Hiding or running from what is happening only allows ‘it’ to grow stronger. It starts with our individual responses. We each have a part to play so that ‘somebody’ doesn’t become a victim. We don’t have to be ‘Forever the victim’ or a victim of circumstance(s). Anybody and everybody is ‘a somebody’ who can be a victor!
